How can I reduce my maximum bid?

I am a first time user of ebay and have placed a bid on an item that I am interested in, however, I have just noticed that I may not require it any longer and want to either reduce my maximum bid or withdraw my bid altogether. The only action I am however seem to be able to take is to INCREASE the bid and not reduce it.  Can anybody please help.
