I have just joined e bay. When I try to make a bid it asks me to "enter valid number" as well as the bid amount. What is this valid number?

In contrast to English-Speaking countries, If you are willing to bid in eBay Spain and the amount you want to type is fractional, you should use a comma instead a dot as a radix point or character.   Another possible reason behind this message could be you are typing in a number that's lower than the showing bid.

No other reason comes to my mind now.
